HIKING IN CROATIA
Most of the mountains in Croatia are part of mountain massif Dinarides. Highest peak in Croatia is Dinara (1831 m) on mountain Dinara. Other mountains in Croatia are: Velebit, Biokovo, Gorski Kotar, Svilaja, Ucka, Medvednica, Papuk, Psunj, Pljesevica...
Mot of these mountains are consisted of karstic terrain and woods. Mountains near the coast mostly have poor vegetation and rare settlements, but mountains between rivers Sava and Drava, in continental Croatia, have rich vegetation and are suitable for relaxing hiking.
Bjelolasica is highest mountain in region of Gorski Kotar. It is rich with vegetation and has known ski resort.
Mountain Kozjak is located in region Central Dalmatia. It is well connected with roads, so it is suitable for walks and hiking.
Mala (Small) and Velika (Large) Paklenica are also known mountains. Small Paklenica is more scar and wild than Large Paklenica. Climbing is forbidden in Small Paklenica.
Mountain Risnjak is located in region Gorski Kotar. It is known for valleies Lazac, Suha Recina, Leska and Segine. Risnjak is consisted of limestone and solomite rocks. It is poor with water, but rich with vegetation.
Mountain Ucka is located in region and peninsula Istria. It has very simple shape. Ucka is rich with woods of chestnut, oak and beech.
Mountain Zavizan, on Velebit, has mountain house on peak Vucjak (1644 m). There are many roads leading to peak Vucjak from all sides of the mountain.
Papuk is mountain located in Croatian region Slavonija. Highest peaks are Tocak (887 m), Papuk (953 m), Lom (887 m). Most of the vegetation are woods of oak and beech. Mountain Papuk is ideal for developing mountain tourism, because of the rich vegetation, bays, cliffs, rich animal life...
Biokovo is mountain located in region Dalmatia. It is 1762 m high, with highest peak St. Jure. Mountain Biokovo is 10 km wide and 36 km long. There are 8 tourist settlements developed in the bottom of mountain Biokovo.
Velebit is longest mountain in Croatia. It is 145 km long and 10-30 km wide. Highest peak is Vaganski Vrh (1757 m). Mountain Velebit is stretching along the coast within regions Kvarner and North Dalmatia. Mountain Velebit is divided on North, Middle, South and South-east Velebit.
