Nin (Croatia, North Dalmatia) is small town situated 15 km northwest from Zadar. Center of Nin is on a islet 500 m long which is connected with land with two bridges. Nin is consisted of historical island, weekend settlement Zdrijac, new part of Nin, Bilotinjak and Nin's Vodice. First tribe in Nin were Liburns in 9th century BC. In 1st century BC, Roman influence comes to Nin. In 6th and 7th century Nin becomes cultural and political center for Croats.
Town of Nin is the oldest Croatian royal settlement. An amazing type of city-church complex, it is one of a kind in the whole of the Mediterranean region. Small, isolated “places of worship” are proof of the oldest Croatian culture going back from the 9th to the 12th century.
Position little town of Nin is in a shallow lagoon about 14 km away from Zadar. The positions of this 500m broad island as well as its history are very magnificant.
Many Croatian lords and kings are connected with Nin. Some of them are:
- Lord Branimir - who got letter of recognition of Croatia from the Pope;
- Peter Kresimir the 4th - 1069. calls Adriatic sea "our sea" in deed of donation to Zadar's monastery;
- Ludovik 1. Anzuvinac - 1371. kept council of citizenship of Croatia and Dalmatia and calls Nin Royal town of Dalmatia.
After Venetians burnt Nin in 1646., Nin never recovered its significance again. After World War II. Nin started developing, and in 1997. by decision of Croatian parlament it got status of town. There were built brickwork and saltwork in Nin. Nin's saltwork is one of the largest producers of salt in Croatia and its salt is one of the best quality in Europe.
SIGHTSEEING
The visitor can enter the town by crossing over the one of two old bridges and through one of the historical main gates to see the sights inside the city walls of Nin. The town has cultural and historical monuments as well as in archaeological findings and collections and well known are: St. Cross Church (9th c.) - the smallest Cathedral in the world, the Pre-Romanesque Church of St. Nicholas (12th c.), the bronze statue of the famous Croatian Bishop Gregorius, the Archaeological collection and many more.
HISTORY
Nin was one of the capital towns for the Liburnians until the arrival of the Roman Empire, and since then the well known Municipium called Aenona. It is the oldest town and the residence of the Croatian kings and it was a very important port in those times. The town had two destructions in 1571 and again in 1646, what caused the total desertion of the town by its people. But nowadays, the town's population is 1700 people. The town is a attraction for tourists, mainly because of its in heritage, gorgeous pebbly beaches and a modern tourist resort «Holiday Village Zaton».
ATTRACTIONS
The medicinal tradition of Nin is well known since the Roman times till today. The shallow sea warmed by sun offers the thermo therapy of different rheumatic illnesses, mostly the various spine illnesses and the consequently resulting troubles, of female sterility and of different skin diseases. The therapy is done in natural environment as well as the following bathing and swimming in the warm seawater.
