BRELA TOURIST INFORMATION
Brela (Croatia, Central Dalmatia) is town situated about fifteen kilometers north-west from Makarska. For decades Brela has an important role in tourism of the seaside around Makarska, because of the thick pine forests, long and pebbly beaches, and fresh water springs. The town has the older part called Gornja Brela near the old road in the hill, and the new part located on the coast called Donja Brela.
Its woods and beaches are bathed in brilliant sunshine. The breeze brings the smell of the sea and aromatic herbs and seagull’s cries are mixed with singing of birds. In 1968 Brela was gained a nickname "Champion of Jadran" for high achievements in tourist activity. The town of Brela takes place by the sea shore, between mountain of Biokovo and the island of Brac. Brela shows its beauty through marvelous beaches, pine woods, bright blue sea, Mediterranean climate, sport grounds, marina, ecological surrounding and relaxing peace, top quality service in luxury hotels and private accommodation, and guarantees unforgettable holidays.
Brela has natural heritage like: Oak-tree at Soline, natural monument, a thousand years old with a huge crown; Biokovo mountain - Natural Park with several horticultural monuments (wild vegetation, geomorphologic and botanical locations), panoramic view - spectacular and gorgeous jewel.
Colors, flowers and smells give to Brela a typical atmosphere of the Mediterranean. There is a mountain above Brela that the stars give a glance at night. It is a place where winds make stories, where pine needles and flowers make the veil around houses and restaurants. Brela is a luxury of vegetation, tourism, sun and sea. Everything makes a special feeling and relation to Brela.
HISTORY
When we talk about the history of Brela we have to go back into the past for more than two millenniums. It is therefore not strange that the first ruler of this Adriatic oasis - Berylliae of the Antiquity, is Silvan, the Illyrian-Roman god of woods and untouched nature. The ecology has found its name still in the old times in this land of Mediterranean secret, but 1937 is mentioned as a beginning of organized tourism.
Nowadays, Brela is a modern tourist settlement of rich tradition and natural beauty. The Byzantine emperor Constantine VII Profirogent was first to mention the place in his letters in the 10th century. Brela offers a rich cultural heritage, so therefore it can be found several necropolis of Illyrian origin, as well as graves from the Roman times. The most interesting historical monument is a relief (II or III century) showing Illyrian god Silvan which was built in the lintel of Srecko Filipovic´s stable in Brela-Soline (the sculpture is in a private collection of Zvonimir Filipovic in Brela-Soline). The sculpture has a blade in one hand symbolizing a pastoral cult with agriculture. The cult of Silvan was really adored by the Illyrian tribe Dalmati.
In the town of Brela you can find these cultural monuments:
• Lady of Karmen Church, a valuable monument of baroque architecture, in harmony with the surrounding. It was built in 1715 in the appreciation of victory against Turks, and the church is also called Lady of Victory church too.

NATURE SIGHTS
THE ROCK "KAMEN BRELA"
The symbol of this Adriatic pearl which is a part of a magnificent pebbly beach and yet somehow secluded, makes for an image which any visitor will remember. There are numerous legends about how this rock found it's place right here, but in any case it's weird occurrence.
The Punta Rata beach is the most beautiful beach in Brela which attracts everyone with bright clear sea and the shade of centuries old pines.
VRUJA
Vruja is a beautiful place where cliffs go into the sea to depths more than 100m. Unfortunately, numerous attempts of identification of the exact depth of the water spring were not successful.
Vruja is a system of water springs or even a part of river Cetina which travels under ground somewhere in the Dalmatian hinterland and comes out right here creating a magnificent location for divers. Big groups of fish gather here to feed and reproduce. This creates images equal to those about the Red sea. That is why each new dive down here is so uncertain and interesting.
