CENTRAL DALMATIA - REGION SPLIT TOURIST INFORMATION
PANTAN SWAMP
The Pantan swamp is not far from the Trogir, that all that remains of the onetime swamp, which stretched over much greater area, but through the centuries its size has been reduced because of the earth fill up and the growing urbanization. The Pantan swamp's value today is as an illustrative example of a swamp on the eastern Adriatic coast, where there is mixture of fresh-water and sea, which is very specific. There's a very significant fish hatchery in the brackish water of the Pantan lagoon, whole swamp is the resting place for all of the diverse kinds of swamp birds on their long travels as they migrate. Autumn is the best time for bird watching.
THE OLD OLIVE TREE
In the place near Split , Kastel Stafilic, there is and old olive tree that is a protected nature sight. It has a very beautiful habitué and it approximately 1,500 years old. It probably originates from south Italy or Greece , because it belongs to a sort that doesn't grow in these parts which makes interesting.
BOTANICAL GARDEN
The botanical garden in the elementary school "Ostrog" in Kastel Luksic dates from 1976 when the school building was built. It covers an area of 4 hectares and it was created thanks to the care and enthusiasm of teachers and pupils. At the beginning there were no great ambitions in creating the garden, but as time went by it reached an enormous quality and value with a large number of autochthonous and exotic species some of which, in this very garden, were successfully cultivated for the first time on the Croatian Adriatic.
JADRO RIVER
The upper course and source of the River Jadro have been protected since 1984 as a special ichthyologic reserve. Thus, the endemic subspecies soft-mouthed trout developed in the Jadro River . It is unique to this area and because of it is of great value, rare and potentially endangered.
MARJAN PENINSULA
The Marjan peninsula in Split is two things, the city's symbol and an integrated part of its past. Citizens of Split are emotionally attached to Marjan, therefore it was and still is an inspiration to many Split 's artists. We can say that it stands as a myth in the city's collective mind. The park forest Marjan today exspands over a greater part of the area with Allepo pines, part of a meadow and arable areas, the sea-shore and Sustjepan park. Marjan is also the best known place picnics and during the summer its beaches are packed with people. On its north side, in the cove Bene, there are food and recreation facilities and the forest reaches almost to the very sea. Since Marjan is closed for traffic it is a great place for nature walks. There is a magnificent view of Split and its surroundings from the top of Marjan. There are also many monuments on Marjan - remains of Illyrian hill-forts, churches, and dwellings of hermits.
VRANJACA CAVE
Vranjaca Cave located near the village Kotlenica in the hinterland of Split , was found in 1903. It is maybe the most beautiful cave in Central Dalmatia , typical for the Dalmatian region, which is formed in mineral limestone. It is consisted of two main halls and a pathway which connects them. The cave is very impressive and is rich in shapes typical for caves. Its depth is about 65 meters and its length is about 300 meters. The cave is easily accessible and attractive for excursionists, because of its attractive interior and surroundings, as well as the proximity of road and parking place. There has been electricity in the cave since 1929, and there is a hiking path that is about 300 meters long.
CANYON OF THE CETINA RIVER
The Cetina river canyon stretches from the mouth near the town of Omis and 10 kilometers upstream. The canyon is one of the most amazing geomorphologic phenomena which was created by the Cetina as a typical Dalmatian river. Between Mosor an Dinara above Omis, Cetina River has deeply cut into the limestone base, forming a canyon up to 300 meters deep. On some places the river is completely calm, and in the other places it flows fast. It a great place for relaxing.
PUBESCENT OAK
The pubescent oak in Donja Brela is presumed to be over 300 years, and with its great size and well developed habitués it dominates the landscape. There are very few oaks of this size along Croatian coast.
BRELA
Because of the dense pine forest, beautiful beaches, clear sea, springs of potable water, Brela has been famous for many years as one of the most attractive seaside resorts in Dalmatia . Beautiful pine forests are situated close to few gorgeous pebble beaches. Brela also offer a beautifully arranged seaside promenade and a number of great restaurants with excellent seafood.
PROLOSKO BLATO
Prolosko Blato is a large swampy region of the Imotski field, that is part of the year under water, and just one small part is flooded during the whole year ( Prolozac Lake ). Because it is the habitat of swamp birds as the resting place on their long journey as they migrate it has a great ecological value. In the period of high waters, when the whole Blato (Swamp) is flooded, only a small island named Manastir (Monastery) remains. It's called like that because the Franciscans built a monastery on it in 1453. According to legend, the monks, fearing the frequent Turkish attacks, used to fill up chasms through which the water drained away, so in that way they could keep the water whole year long and protect the monastery on the island.
VRLJIKA RIVER
The upper course, source, and area around the sides of the Vrljika River about 100 meters wide, is a protected ichthyological reserve. This river is important because of its numerous endemic species and different species of fish.
RED LAKE & BLUE LAKE
The best examples of specific hydrographic and morphology of the Dalmatian karst are Red Lake and Blue Lake which are located near the town of Imotski . Both lakes are characterized by a specific shape, dimensions and colors, and by their origin they belong to the so-called caved lakes, which mean that they have been formed by ceilings of large caves caving in.
Red Lake is situated 1.5 kilometres northwest of Imotski. The shores are mostly red-brown, the color which gave the lake its name, and are almost completely vertical.
Blue Lake is situated near the town of Imotski in a precipice approximately 200 meters deep. Its greatest width is about 500 meters and is about 800 long, but these dimensions greatly vary since the lake may even sometimes dry up during the summer. The water is clearly blue, so that's why the lake got its name. The shores aren't as steep as those of Red Lake, so there is a pathway leading to the very bottom. During the summertime Modro jezero becomes a very popular bathing place, and when it dries up boys have a sort of tradition and play football on its bottom.
Galipovac, Lokvicici and Knezovic Lakes belong to the group of Lokvicici Lakes . These lakes are not as popular as the two previous lakes, but are similar in origin and appearance although less accessible (Lokvicic and Knezovic Lakes) which gives them an extra touch of wild and intact beauty.
