Kolocep (Croatia, South Dalmatia, Island Kolocep) is very green island. It has centuries old woods of carob and pine, garden filled with lemons and oranges, olive groves, with unbelievely beautiful beaches and large fragrant park. Kolocep is one of the most beloved excursion from Dubrovnik and other places. On Kolocep, there are two settlements, Donje Celo & Gornje Celo. One settlement, Gornje Celo, is on the east, Donje Celo is on the west. Settlements are connected with windy road through gardens and olive groves.
On island of Kolocep you can see many remnants of old architecture, such as an old pre-Romantic chapel, ruins of basilica, summer homes, guard towers, chapel of Saint Anton... In chapel of Saint Anton you can find polyptych of Ugrinovic Ivan, from 15th century. He was one of the best among Dubrovnik painters. Beautiful landscape was atractive to many painters, so many of them wantet to paint on island of Kolocep. Kolocep is connected to Dubrovnik`s harbour Gruz several times daily.
Island of Kolocep has an area of 2,35 square kilometres. There is no water springs or permament superficial water, due to limestone compositon of its soil. Most parts of island are covered with forests and subtropical vegetation. Climate is mild Mediterranean. Island is protected from the north wind "bura" by a limestone ridge. There are many sandy and pebble beaches, parks with numerous species of subtropical plants...
Economy is based mostly on tourism, but also on wine making, olive growing, carob, agriculture, citrus and pomegranate plantations, vegetable growing, fisheries, shipping...
