Opuzen Locate On Map

Opuzen (Croatia, South Dalmatia) is very important agrarian center of Neretva area. Opuzen location is right there where river Neretva splits from main flow to other called Small Neretva. People of Dubrovnik bulit here an fortification in the middle ages to protect their interests, mostly merchant. Fortification name was "Posrednica". Neretva fell into Turkish hands in 1490.

Near Opuzen, is even older fortification, named "Brstanik", just above the Podgradina. Brstanik was built by the Bosnian king Tvrtko First, in 1383. Big settlement in this area started in 1715, when the Venetians deserted Citluk and moved their army to the Posrednica. They gave name to present town. Remains of fortifications have not been preserved to present day. Opuzen`s administration, culture and education, are the oldest in river Neretva area. They opened first public school in 1798. Importance of Opuzen was lost when Metkovic take the leading role. Opuzen started to develop even more after the World War II. It was a crossroad of routes that connected Adriatic coast with Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the last decade, Opuzen concentrate to production of citrus fruits.

In Opuzen you can see Roman sculptures from Narona. They are located on the main square, in front of the county district building. Also, you can see church of Saint Stephan, located on square of King Tomislav. It was constructed in 1883, in front of the old, shabbier church. It is build in baroque style and it`s furnished with beautiful altars from the Bilinic workshop from Split. Church owns the painting by Filip Naldi, Italian painter, from 1852.

EEL

Opuzen is home for eel. Eel is long, snake-like, muscular body and it is very recognizable at the first sight. It is very misterious fish. People doesn`t know much about it. Eel was caught in large quantities and it was very important export product. When the dam was built eels have been diminished and today they are caught in a small quantities, enough only for small use, mostly in local restaurants. Before serving, eels are kept in a special wooden boxes, with water in it. Eels than cleans their organism so they become more delicous. Female grow up to 1 meter and males up to 0,5 metres. They have green-blue back and ocher-yellow stomach.
