Plitvice lakes (Croatia, Continental Croatia) are bounded in 1949. and they cover area of 29 685,15 ha. In 1949. they are declared first Croatian national park. Plitvice lakes are put in a list of world`s heritage (UNESCO) in 1979.
It is hilly-mountain area consisted of 19 settlements. Plitvice lakes are divided into the Upper lakes and Lower lakes. Upper lakes are Proscansko, Ciganovac, Okrugljak, Batinovac, Big lake, Small lake, Vir, Galovac, Milino lake, Gradinsko, Burgeti and Kozjak. Lower lakes are Milanovac lake, Gavanovac lake, Kaluderovo lake and Novakovica brod lake. All lakes consist many beautiful waterfalls.
Plitvice lakes have very rich vegetation (Flora): algae, moss, Cypripedium calceolus-most beautiful orchid in Europe, carnivores plants, woods (hornbeam, oak, beech, fir trees...)... Meadows and pastures occupy 6 957 ha.
Animal world of Plitvice lakes is also very rich. Park symbol of Plitvice lakes is brown bear. Other animals are crabs, butterflies, insects, trouts, birds, hedgehogs, martens, wild boars, bats, wolfs, deers, lynxes, otters, wild cats...
In area of Plitvice lakes there have been found remains of prehistory settlements of Illyrian tribe Japodi. In 18th century ranchers started to inhabit this area, building wooden cottages in woods. In 1896. the first hotel was built of wood and stone for 200 guests on Great Poljana. It burnt in 1939. in a fire. There are many buildings for tradition trades functioning on water power: saw-mills, dumbbells...
There are many hotels located in area of Plitvice lakes, and a camp. National restaurant Lika house offers many traditional meals of Lika (part of Croatia). You can go on a tour around Plitvice lakes by foot, you can use small trains and boats to get on different parts of park.
