Sibenik (Croatia, North Dalmatia) is a medium size city on the Adriatic coast. Tourism began to expand here in the 1970s and 1980s, at the same time the local population (habitants of the island of Murter) became more aware of the dangers of mass tourism, which dominated Croatian tourism in those years.
Sibenik is the oldest autochthonous town in the Adriatic. It is located in the Central Dalmatia, at the estuary of river Krka.
Sibenik is cultural and administrative center of Sibenik – Knin district. In the history Sibenik was developed on 70 m high rocky uplift. It is believed that it happened in 9th century. Sibenik is first time mentioned in 1066. in a deed of donation of a king Petar Kresimir the 4th. In 1925. Sibenik is developing as port and transit center after the railroad to Zagreb has been built.
Sibenik was under many different authorities such as Hungarian – Croatian, Venetian, Austrian, French, Yugoslav and today it is a town in independent Republic of Croatia.
St. Michael is the protector of the town. He represents victory and bravery. There are many monuments and buildings to see in Sibenik.
Sibenik`s theater in the building that was built in 1870. It is the first and only theater building in Croatia that was not built by the country, but by 28 stockholders living in Sibenik.
There are 4 draw wells from 15th century with adventure Visitors` center that tells stories about Sibenik.
Sibenik`s museum built in 1925. is located in ex Duke`s palace near the Cathedral. Gallery of St. Krsevan, located in the street of Don Krsto Stosic, deals with art pedagogic work with young people.
Sibenik has rich cultural and historic heritage:

- Monuments of sacral architecture
- Art heritage

St. Jakov`s Cathedral has been built for over a 100 years. It is whole built of rock, with facade in a shape of trifolium.
There are two national parks on Sibenik`s riviera: National park Krka and National park Kornati.
National park Krka shows the Croatian karst at its best. This area is rich with flora and fauna. National park Krka was established in 1985.
National park Kornati is a group of about 130 islands, islets and reefs. Kornati islands are rocky, covered with thin grass and rare trees. The Kornati islands don`t have spring water.
You can find accommodation in Sibenik in over 1200 private houses and in over 1510 hotel rooms and apartments. They are all highly equipped and cathegorised with a top class. There are also three camps.
Some notable people from Sibenik are: Antun Vrancic, the writer, Roberto Ferruzzi, the painter, Drazen Petrovic, basketball player, Goran Visnjic, actor known for his role on ER, Maksim Mrvica, the pianist, Gordon Schildenfeld, football player.
NATIONAL PARK "KORNATI"
The Kornati archipelago is a specific group of islands which are located between the Sibenik and Zadar archipelagoes, and it has an area space of approx 320 km2 (150 km2 of land). This island archipelago on the Adriatic (1185 islands, 99 populated), was always an attraction for numerous number of sailors, divers and hikers.
The national park “Kornati” has length of 35 km (19NM), and its width is 13 km (7NM). The park is positioned into 4 lines of islands, that divide it into two groups: the top Kornati (the Sit and Zut island line), and the bottom Kornati (Kornati and Pisker island line). Only 9 islands have an area space that is bigger than 1km2 whereas 76 islands have less than 1 hectare.
NATIONAL PARK "KRKA"
National Park Krka was pronounced as a park in 1985 and it's the seventh national park in Croatia. The park is located in the Sibenik-Knin County and the park area is 118 km2.
The park is situated on the river Krka. (2 km downstream from the town Knin to the town Skradin, and also it includes the lower course of the river Cikola). The spring of the river starts from the Dinara Mountains near the town of Knin . The river Krka is 72 km long. The park space, which includes the entire basin of the river, is 2088 km2.
The amount of water that flows down the Skadinski Buk is 55 m3/s, but when is winter it grows up to 350 m3/s. The river has seven waterfalls, Bilusic Buk (22,4m), Brljan (15.5m), Monoljavacki Waterfalls (a group of waterfalls with a total height of 56,6m, and a main barrier that is 32m high.), Rosnjak(8,4m), Miljacka waterfall (23,8m), Roski waterfall (25,5 m) and Skradinski Buk (17 travertine steps with a total height of 45,7m).
With a total downfall of 242 m, Krka is a rear natural phenomenon. Travertine is a limestone that builds up naturally. This travertine makes up into a variety of shapes (travertine brinks, sheaths, cloaks), which are a phenomenon of the park. The waterfalls are biodynamic creations; they grow up a little bit every year.
