Ston (Croatia, South Dalmatia, Peljesac peninsula) is a small town of a big historical importance. It has famous walls and many cultural and historical monuments. Ston is beautiful example of a Dubrovnik architecture. You can eat in one of the many restaurants which offer all kind of domestic specialities, especially fish, like labstors and oysters. Stone is known for a clean sea, sand beaches with old olive tress, swimming, sea activities, such as fishing, diving and other water sports... Campsites are located near Ston.
Ston is located in a north-west part of a channel with the same name. Economy is based on a fishing, farming, production and processing of synthetic materials, olives, viniculture, salt works, tourism... Ston is located near a crossroad of state road and a road to Peljesac peninsula.
On Starigrad Hill you can see remains of the Roman castrum, church of Our Lady of Luzina and on the Pozvizd Hill you can see towers and walls of the Prozvizd Fortress. Walls are 980 metres long. Ston was founded in 1333, when Dubrovnik started to rule with Peljesac peninsula..
In the 1333 and till 1506 huge fortified complex was built. Famous masters were: Bernardin from Parma (Italy) 1461, Paskoje Milicevic from Croatia 1488, Zupan Bunic (Croatia) 1455 and Olivier (France) 1472. School was founded in 1389, orphanage in 1494 and the almshouse in 1485 (remains of the building are still here). Chancery of the Dubrovnik is the most impressive building within the walls. It was built in Gothic and Renaissance styles. Also you can visit Sorkocevic Palace and the former bishop`s palace, built in 1573, elements of late Renaissance style and the large collection of a stone monuments.
