Zivogosce Locate On Map

Zivogosce (Croatia, Central Dalmatia) is situated on the southern side of the Makarska Riviera, beneath mount Biokovo. It is only 20 km from Makarska, 80 km from Split and 120 km from Dubrovnik. It is composed of three smaller places: Porat - Mala Duba – Blato.

Zivogosce was populated in Illyrian and Roman times, to which Illyrian graves on hill Suzina stand as witnesses. Villa Rustika in Mala Duba and Blato do the same. Carved into a living rock above the spring of Pokrivenice on the coast, the well known Licinianus epigram from 474. g. BC, comprised of 16 Latin hexameters – the most beautiful specimen of classical literature. As a settlement, Zivogosce is for the first time mentioned in the mid 13th century.

The Franciscan abbey in Zivogosce, 400 years old, was this regions center of spiritual life, with a wealthy library and valuable art work. It has its present form since the 40's when a more important tourism development begins here. Natural attraction of olive groves and pine woods stretching over pebbled beaches that are long, clean and unpolluted sea, all in the foothill of a large mountain and all giving tourists a special lure and pleasure of stay.
