Supetar (island Brac) - Tourism
Supetar (Croatia, Central Dalmatia, Island Brac) is small island town situated on a horse-shoe shaped cove, Supetar fascinates with its simplicity. Everything here is very close and made to measure: restaurants, shops, banks, post offices, market, cinema, library, health care services and various sports facilities. Vacation in Supetar can be made even more interesting by the free concerts, theatrical shows, folklore festivals and various other events which are organized as part of the Supetar Summer of Culture.
Supetar has very well ferry line connection with Split (more than 14 trips daily during summer), and it is an ideal destination for all those who want to benefit from the rich monumental heritage and natural beauties of Central Dalmatia mainland (Diocletian's Palace, Trogir, Salona, Klis, Vranjaca, Cetina Canyon, Krka Falls, Sbenik Cathedral...). We must not forget to mention the numerous opportunities for walks and excursions on the island: Blaca desert, Vidova Gora, Zlatni Rat, Museum of Brac in Škrip. Every place on the island of Brac has its own beauty and charm.
Supetar has high-quality hotels and many households offer private accommodation facilities in the form of apartments.
MONUMENTS
With its beaches and restaurants, we recommend you to visit the parish church of Annunciation (18th c.) along with other buildings (Leroj – the clock tower) and the Church Museum. Outside the Museum, there is a stone sculpture showing St. Victor, the work of Petar Jaksic, a contemporary sculptor from Supetar. He is also the author of the Mother Theresa sculpture, which can be seen at the entrance of the church. Inside the church, the Madonna with Saints is the work of local painter Feliks Tironi (1722-1808).
Outside the church we can see early Christian mosaics dating back to the 6th century. The church was built on the spot of an early Christian basilica dedicated to St Peter – hence the towns name Supetar.
When you enter Supetar harbour from Split first thing to see is the Mausoleum of the family Petrinovic, which is the work of Croatian artist - Toma Rosandic (1878-1957). By the church of St Nicholas, there are two Christian sarcophagi with Christians signs and below the cemetery, we can see ruins of the Roman Villa Rustica.
In the cemetery, you can find a number of tombstones by the renowned Croatian sculptor Ivan Rendic (1849 -1932). Some of the best examples are the Pieta, above the tomb of Mihovil Franasovic, the Art Nouveau styled tomb of Rinaldo Culic, and the mausoleum of the family Radnic.
Rendic spent his youth and the last 11 years of his life in Supetar. He studied in Trieste, Venice and Florence and by his work he is regarded as the most important Croatian sculptor of the 19th century. There are 208 known works of Rendic displayed in 51 cities across Southern Europe. Other works can be seen in the”Gallery Ivan Rendic”, on the upper floor of Supetar's town library. In front of the gallery, there is also his sculpture representing the Allegory of Mind. On the same square, there is a little church dedicated to St Martin (18th c.), which is today used onley for art exhibitions.
One third of total early Romanesque churches preserved in Dalmatia can be found on Brac. About an hour climb the hill from the town is the 11th/12th century Romanesque church of St Luke. Inside is special note engraved from a galleon, so that is the oldest known depiction of Dalmatia's seafaring history. To arrive there, walk up the street Petra Jakšica, then take the street Put Svetog Roka and cross the main road to join the old road to St. Roch. There you can see this fine 18th c. baroque church and enjoy in the beautiful views over Supetar. St Luke's church is just 10 minutes walk further on.
Everywhere on Brac you will see small circular stone buildings between olive plants, called bunja. Bunja has characteristic domed roof and on Brac we can see some of the finest examples of these ancient shepherd dwellings in the Mediterranean, following the pattern of those in tholos, Crete; the nuragho in Sardinia; cabana as they are called in Provence; barraca in Catalonia; casella in Ligury, and closer to home - trullo in Puglia and kažun in Istria.
