Kukljica (Croatia, North Dalmatia, Island Ugljan) is a fishing place situted on southeast side of island Ugljan near Zadar. It is connected with Zadar with ferry connection. You can get to Zadar by car, train or a plane and then with a ferry to Kukljica.

Kukljica is a small tourist and fishing village on the island of Ugljan near Zadar and the island of Pasman, well connected to the land by car ferry. It has beautiful landscapes with thick pine forests, beautiful beaches, crystal clear sea and the mild Mediterranean climate which offers numerous possibilities for a lovely holiday. Kukljica is synonym for the "gateway to the Telascica Nature Park and the National Park Kornati Islands" since it is located at the island's extreme southwestern point. Old part of Kukljica is divided from tourist peninsula "Green Punta" with a beautiful bay. Green Punta is tourist settlement with villas and apartments in pine wood next to the sea. Kukljica has beautiful sandy beaches Sabusa, Kostanj and Jelenica.

Every year there is attraction kept in Kukljica for The Lady of a Snow. It is believed that 400 years ago it was snowing in summer. You should visit two churches in Kukljica: Church of St. Jerolim, from 15th century and Church of St. Paul, from 16th century.

In the old part of village examples of local, popular architecture can still be seen and it is a special pleasure to walk down the bay and see the small port always filled with fishing boats and sailboats. Attractive pebbly beaches shaded by centuries-old pinewoods. In the near town of Kostanj there is a valuable historical monument, the renewed old church of St. Jerome from the 13th century.

The true attraction of Kukljica is the traditional procession by boat on the Feast of Our Lady of the Snow (5th of August), when the statue of Our Lady of the Snow is taken from the church of Our Lady of the Snow in the Zdrelascica bay to the parish church of St. Paul dating from the 17th century.

HISTORY

The island of Ugljan is a big island in the Adriatic and it has been populated all the time since Paleolithic, the early part of the Stone Age. From that period, archeologists found eight stone knives and one ax, which archeologist Frane Bulic distributed among Archeological museums in Croatia.

From the Roman period they found a brick floor called "villa rustica", stone mosaic and a stone urn. Carlo Federico Bianchi, in his "Zara Cristiana", writes that there were various salt works in Kukljica built in Roman period.

The first known writer mentioned the name Kukljica in books from 1106, published by Tadija Smiciklas in "Codex diplomaticus" , and in which there is a mention of a donation of oliveplants to the monastery of Sv. Krsevan in Zadar.

Well known buildings, although unfortunately damaged, are the castle (summer residence) of family Nassi from 1623 and the ruins of an unknown building in the palace of Ortulan.

The architecture of stone houses, in authentic Dalmatian style, is most noticeable in Kukljica. Houses are built together one by one and forming a small square of an almost rectangular form. That square and the group of houses are called palace. Best-preserved palaces are: Bacin dvor, Benin dvor, Jojin dvor, Lisicin dvor, Lonin dvor and Martinov dvor.
