HISTORY
The very name of the place witnesses its long history going back to the Prehistoric period (Illyrians, 2000 BC - 1st cent. AD). One of the hypotheses thinks that the Illyrian origin and the meaning of the toponym are based on the preserved Old Illyrian elements in the Albanian language which mean "a village at the source". The toponyms and the archaeological finds point out to the conclusion that the village was inhabited in Illyrian times. The oldest find say about the existence of a settlement on the south slopes of the hill Sutvid that date from the period of Classical Antiquity.
There are other localities that represent further evidence of constant life in the Tucepi area. The church called Crkva "Gospina rodenja" (the church of Our Lady’s Birth) is situated on the local cemetery in the south-east, the other church; called Crkva svetog Jure (St. George'church) is situated in the southwest of the village. St.George's church was built in 1311 and it is a kind of Romanesque-Gothic building with a semicircular apse, but the church was completely restored in the years 1992 and 1993.
Throughout the late Middle Ages this area was ruled by Bosnian rulers, which is proved by the Charter of Kresevo, issued on August 12, 1434 by Juraj Vojsalic. In this Charter the village of Tucepi was mentioned for the first time. From the end of the 15. Century to the end of the 17. Century the Coastland was ruled by the Turks. During the 18. Century, although the Venetian rule had been set up. This period was marked by wars and border disputes, and has left several fortification objects - towers, with the features of local building styles. All the towers are situated in the border area of Gornji Tucepi. The Saric tower is situated on the rock that just out from the foot of the Biokovo. The Buselic tower has a similar position, but it is near the town of Srida sela. The Lalic tower, situated in the village, is surrounded by the farmland residential - buildings. In these hard times the inhabitants of Tučepi managed to build St. Catherine's church (in 1541).
In the coastal area of the town there are three baroque style country-houses, dating from the eighteenth century, built by the members of the well-off noble families of Grubisic, Ivanisevic and Kacic. The most impressive country-house, which belonged to the family Grubišić, has been converted into a hotel - it is today's hotel "Kastelet".
